Safe Routes to Schools

Queens, New York

New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) has been implementing school safety improvements around schools with enrollments greater than 250 students since 2006. School locations were prioritized based on traffic incident data.  Arora and Associates, P.C., has been retained by the City of New York, Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) to develop the Preliminary and Final Design for Safe Routes to Schools for 28 locations located near eight schools in the Borough of Queens. The scope of work includes traffic mitigation measures that target roadway improvements near these schools. The existing infrastructure within the boundaries of project will be rehabilitated through roadway improvements including installation of traffic signals, crosswalks, sidewalks, realignment at intersections, curb/sidewalk extensions, installation of pedestrian ramps, landscaping, utility work, street lights, or relocation of such items, as well as signal timing modifications.  The scope of work for these schools includes sidewalk/curb, median tip extensions and curb alignment. Receiving pedestrian ramps will comply with ADA standards.  An Auto Turn analysis with School Bus, City Bus, truck and FDNY vehicles will also be conducted as part of the analysis for each intersection.
