Goethals Bridge over the Arthur Kill Replacement Program

New York and New Jersey

Arora and Associates, P.C. (Arora) provided drainage, civil design, traffic engineering and permitting services for the Replacement of the Goethals Bridge project as a subconsultant to the KWM/Parsons Design Build team. The project included design of the drainage systems for all surface drainage across multiple jurisdictional limits requiring close coordination with permitting agencies in two states and multiple independent transportation entities. Arora performed analysis of bridge drainage impacts on the roadway drainage, preparation of drainage and runoff calculations from the NY State line to the easterly abutment of Goethals Bridge, and preparation of a drainage reports for both New York and New Jersey.  Arora also prepared the soil erosion and sedimentation control plans.

Arora prepared the designs necessary to provide drainage systems to manage stormwater runoff in accordance with all applicable regulations and governmental approvals for all project facilities and temporary construction stages.  The drainage systems collect, treat, convey, and outlet stormwater runoff at jurisdictionally approved discharge points. The drainage system utilizes the existing storm drain systems prior to treatment of the project runoff outside of the main bridge. The project hydrology was developed using TR-55 methodology (equivalent to HEC-MMS & TR-20) with the NRCS 24-hour rainfall curves used to estimate the runoff rates. The tributary drainage areas to the bridge were developed using TR-55 with the most remote time of concentration (Tc) flow path. PondPack and InRoads Storm and Sanitary (equivalent to HydroCAD) were used for the routing of the flows within basins and closed drainage systems.
