Route 35 Emergency Repairs, Mantoloking, New Jersey

New Jersey

In response to Superstorm Sandy, Arora was retained by NJDOT to design and manage a solution for the complete ocean breach in Mantoloking Borough, New Jersey. Large portions of NJ Route 35 – the primary north/south highway on the island – as well as the CR 528 approach of the Mantoloking Bridge (connecting the island to the mainland) were completely washed away. Along with these roadways, retaining walls, traffic signals, and underground/aerial utilities were also undermined or completely destroyed.

The photo shows the largest breached section of Route 35 (MP 9.89 to MP 10.00). Design and construction support services for the reconstruction of both Route 35 and CR 528 began on November 1, 2012 and the project was completely designed and substantially reconstructed within six weeks of the project start.
