Allegheny Mountain Westbound Relocation, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission

Somerset County, Pennsylvania

Arora and Associates, P.C. prepared bid documents for relocating two separate sections of the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the eastern approach to the Allegheny Tunnel. The current westbound alignment included a series of short curves along the turnpike roadway through mountainous terrain. The steep grades and short curves made this section of the turnpike prone to accidents. The current eastbound alignment is more straight forward consisting of lesser roadway grades on longer sweeping horizontal curves. Arora's project included the relocation of the westbound roadway lanes to be concentric with the eastbound lanes. The construction will entail two million yards of rock excavation along the face of two mountains to accommodate the relocated roadway. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission required that two travel lanes be maintained in either direction for the length of construction. Arora's excavation waste plan was able to dispose of all the excavated material without moving it off site or disrupting traffic.
